Spring 2018 Student Spotlight

We are excited to announce 4 student spotlights. We will be showcasing 2 cosmetology students and 2 massage therapy students for this season!

Our first cosmetology student spotlight is Sierra! Sierra began her journey here at TSPA Rochester in August 2017. Her favorite thing about coming to The Salon Professional Academy is all of her returning clients. She gets to see them on a regular basis and share life experiences and ambitions. Outside of TSPA Sierra shared many fun things with us such as how much she loves her family and how adventurous they are. She enjoys playing softball, outdoor activities, eating pizza and eating eggrolls. A fun fact about Sierra is that she can throw 55 mph and won a contest at the MN State Fair! When asked where she see’s herself after graduating she said she would like to keep doing hair in a salon and then maybe go back to school to become a police officer. Her favorite Redken product that she uses is the One United spray because it does wonders and gets snarls out of everything. Sierra’s favorite technique that she has learned is curling hair with both curling irons and a flat iron. Sierra’s educators have shared, “Sierra is really great with her clients and they sure enjoy her. Her clients feel taken care of and love to come back and see her. We know that where ever she goes in her career she will bring her talent for color and her smile.”

Our first massage therapy student spotlight is Sap. He started our massage therapy program in December of 2017. One of his favorite things about The Salon Professional Academy is his educators. Sap said that after graduating TSPA one of his goals is to be one of the best massage therapists out there. He has loved all of the techniques and skills that his educators have taught him so far and can’t pick just one. Sap’s educators have shared, “Sap is a very sympathetic person-which can be seen in his massage- listening to his clients and making sure their session covers the work that they are receiving. Sap wants to learn more about his culture’s massage therapy techniques and holistic treatments (Chinese and Cambodian).”

Our final cosmetology student spotlight is Mariah. Mariah started the cosmetology program here at The Salon Professional Academy in August 2017. She shared with us that her favorite thing about TSPA is the instructors and the professional atmosphere. Some fun facts about Mariah outside of the Academy is that she works at David’s Bridal as a dress consultant. She was born in New Mexico and moved to Minnesota when she was 3. She has a mom, bother, two dogs, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She enjoys dancing, shopping, and going to Disney. After graduating her goal is to work at Disney doing hair and makeup for Disney characters as well as work at Disney’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. When asked what her favorite Redken product is she said that she loves the Full frame 07 because it gives curls more definition and volume. Mariah’s favorite techniques she has been working on is styling. She absolutely loves to do vintage hair styles working with curls, updos, and even round brushing. You can follow her Instagram page at Mariah’s Makeover Magic. The staff and educators shared, “Mariah is a very enthusiastic individual and always has something to chat about. She enjoys conversing with her guests and taking the time to get to know them.

Our final massage therapy student spotlight is Dave! Dave joined the massage therapy program during our December 2017 start. His favorite thing about TSPA is that it is a relaxed, friendly (almost family like) atmosphere. He also said he enjoys that the massage and cosmetology students as well as educators and owners are all very friendly and easy to get along with. He shared with us, “I have been a server/bartender for over 10 years and worked most recently at the Half Barrel and HuHot Mongolian Grill. I love to perform onstage in theatrical productions and am looking forward to number 16 in May where I will be in Jesus Christ Superstar. Otherwise I am hiking, biking, playing sand volleyball, bowling, shooting pool, or spending time with loved ones.” He shared with us that after graduating from The Salon Professional Academy he will stay in Rochester for now and take clients at the new location of Optimal Movement located on 19th street. At this time his favorite skill is learning the Swedish massage and thinks that we could all use a nice Swedish massage regularly.  Dave’s educators shared, “Dave is the epitome of the phrase ‘Gentle Giant’- a tall man with long hair and a strong voice, but with the compassion and understanding. He loves being an active member of his community and is excited to have a career that allows him to use those skills with his new tremendous skills as a massage therapist. Dave has picked up on massage therapy like a fish to water, and only continues to get better and better.”

“We are so excited about our upcoming One Warm Coat drive and hope the community will support us.  There are nearly 50 million Americans currently living in poverty and struggling to provide a warm coat for themselves or their families.  One Warm Coat’s program helps us keep all of the coats we collect in this community, which will make a big difference for our neighbors who need a coat” said Coat Drive Ambassador and local resident.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of gently worn coats are distributed across North America to children, women and men in need through One Warm Coat’s Coat Drive program. “We are so grateful for our Coat Drive Ambassadors, like The Salon Professional Academy!  It is because of our incredible volunteers that we have been around for 25 years, helping get coats to our neighbors who need them. Thanks to The Salon Professional Academy’s efforts, many people in this community will have a much warmer winter”, commented Jennifer Stockard, President and Chief Executive Officer of One Warm Coat.

One Warm Coat is a national non-profit organization that works to provide a free, warm coat to any person in need and raises awareness of the vital need for warm coats.  One Warm Coat supports individuals, groups, companies and organizations across the country by providing the tools and resources needed to hold a successful coat drive.  Coats are distributed in the communities where they were collected, to any person in need, without charge, discrimination or obligation. Over the past 25 years, One Warm Coat has worked with its volunteers to give away nearly 5 million coats.

TSPA Rochester Open House

Open House

Co-Owners Daniel Link and Jessica Amos

As of August 1st, 2016, Daniel Link, President of Marc Daniel Salon, Maple Grove and Jessica Amos, Owner of Hair Studio 52, Rochester bought the Rochester School of Hair Design and then partnered with The Salon Professional Academy. Over the last year we have been working hard on updating curriculum to be a Redken endorsed academy, adding massage therapy program, and remodeling our building. We are excited to partner with TSPA because,

TSPA is a certified Redken Business Resource and are the only beauty schools in the country awarded the ‘Recognized by Redken for Excellence in Education’ designation.”

On September 11, 2017 we invited the community to join us at our Open House where we wanted to showcase the transformation in becoming The Salon Professional Academy of Rochester! We wanted to share with the licensed professional community our location that we will be having advanced classes available to become the education hub. We also want local salons to know what they can expect from our graduates as they move into the workforce.  In addition, we want future students to know more about our Cosmetology and Massage Therapy programs, and welcome them to meet current students and educators. We loved bringing guests from the community  to learn more about our school and that they are welcome to come in to receive a full menu of services for hair, makeup, nails, and massage at discounted prices.

Jill, Guest Services Coordinator, waiting to greet guests at our Open House!

As guests walked into TSPA Rochester (The Salon Professional Academy of Rochester) on Monday evening they were greeted with friendly faces and wonderful gifts. The fun didn’t  stop there, as they moved around our newly renovated space they had opportunities to speak with students, educators, staff, and owners. We over-heard many incoming guests exclaim  how much they loved the remodel and decor. Guests had the opportunity to learn about the cosmetology program and see some of the student work displayed. Students had prepared before and after pictures of their work as well as special occasion styles on mannequins. They also were able to enjoy complimentary chair massages by our current massage students. Open House attendees enjoyed appetizers, beverages, and were entered into drawings through out the evening. They even had the opportunity to stop at our Selfie Station to snap a pictures of themselves to post on social media with #tsparoch for the chance to win a night out! We rounded out the evening by enjoying a presentation by Redken on a smoky ombre color trend and had the chance to hear from co-owners Daniel Link and Jessica Amos about the transition of the school. The co-owners along with Sally from Salon Centric then had the chance to draw the winners from each category, which you can find below.

We were eager to introduce all of our staff and educators as we have added some new faces to our growing team! You can find updated headshots information about our team here. We are excited to currently have 3 Cosmetology Educators, 2 Massage Therapist Educators, along with the rest of our staff. If you did not get a chance to meet everyone on Monday evening, make sure to stop in and introduce yourself soon!

Head on over to our Media Gallery to see more fun images from our Open House!
